As a former divorce mediator and current couples and
family mediator, I have heard every excuse that parents use to feel
better about breaking up their family. Here are eight of the most common
lies that, if you're considering divorce, you might be telling
yourself.
Solar air heating might be the easiest to understand and
the most accessible solar technology we've covered yet. It's so simple
we built our own solar air heater out of found materials, pop cans and
about $80 worth of materials from a local hardware store.
The creation of the "temporary" migrant worker programs
were at their very core a policy rooted in racist exclusion. And that's
exactly where the clock is being turned to today. The shutting out of
thousands of racialized women from permanent immigration status is being
strangely spun as a step forward.

For millions of Africans, most of whom have lived under
one ruler all their lives, developments in Burkina Faso have breathed a
new life and hope into nascent democratic movement across Sub-Saharan
Africa. The Burkina Faso's people power is bound to affect every other
Sub-Saharan country in some way -- small or large, direct or indirect,
proving that Africa is not preordained to remain under dictatorship
forever.
In
2013, for the first time in the history of HIV and AIDS, we saw more
people gaining access to antiretroviral treatment than the number who
became newly-infected with HIV that same year. But closing this gap
commands deep digging to get at the root drivers of the epidemic.
Robin Montgomery
Executive Director, Interagency Coalition on AIDS and Development (ICAD)
So let's do the math here: three pipelines stretching
4,197 kilometres, generating tens of billions of dollars in profit, the
vast bulk of which will leave Canada, for 228 permanent jobs at
Enbridge, 50 at Kinder Morgan and 35 at Keystone XL. That's 14 jobs per
kilometre. A word to the wise -- don't leave your day job.
Dear Amanda, Happy 18th birthday, honey! I have to say
that although each day and year passing that you are gone it has been
hard but this year seems to be harder than the others. This year will be
more contributions to your legacy that will have impact. This is your
graduating year. An event that you talked about and looked forward to
since you were in grade school.
Four and a half minutes after I read that a grand jury
decided not to indict officer Darren Wilson, I sent a text to my sister
in North Carolina. "You need to get my baby out of that f*&&ing
racist place called the U.S. south!" 'My baby' being my one-year-old
precious baby nephew. I fear that we are running out of time. I know
with certainty that death can creep upon black boys lives in an instant.

award winning playwright/ speaker and visionary coach
To me, Ferguson is a call not only to indict the system
but to decolonize the systems that create and maintain the forces of
Indigenous genocide and anti-blackness. I have a responsibility to make
space on my land for those communities of struggles, to centre and
amplify black voices and to co-resist.
We're winning the fight against HIV/AIDS, but we can't
be complacent. There's still work to be done. For instance, more than 21
million people don't have access to the treatments that can lengthen
and improve their lives--largely because an estimated 19 million are
unaware they have HIV at all.
It is no secret that I love comfort but looking good
too. Many mornings you can find me walking the trails in my
neighbourhood, enjoying the scenery and getting my daily exercise in.
But how to look great after the walk, when I need to go to the produce
store or run errands?
Rob Bridges was among the many visitors to Vancouver
this week that reminded me why the Grey Cup matters. A proud
Hamiltonian, Bridges travelled more than 4,300 kilometres to cheer on
his hometown team, despite the fact they were overwhelming underdogs.
The word consumer often calls to mind the idea of
consumerism, which gets a pretty bad rap. Consumerism can lead to
unbridled consumption, with its complete disregard for environmental
depletion and the impact on anyone who dares to stand in its way. What
does a contemplative approach to consumption look like?
Despite the support of many human rights organizations,
Khaled's inhumane conditions remain the same. He has now suffered more
than 500 days without charge or any semblance of evidence in a two by
two meter, insect-infested cell.
Each year as the holiday season approaches, parents
often ask me the same questions regarding the busy nature of the season
and how it can affect their child's sleep. Below I share some of my
favorite tips for keeping your little ones happy and well rested during
this time of year.

There has never been a more critical and opportune time
to take control of Toronto's development plans. Our city is in the
middle of a development boom, yet we face a housing crisis. Despite this
grim reality, there is still the opportunity to do better for our city.
In fact, we are well-positioned to build a beautiful city that is
vibrant, inclusive, and more mindful of the environment.

Chronically overworked and overtired, we often don't
have enough energy left for doing the things we really want, such as
spending more quality time alone or with loved ones. It doesn't have to
be this way. The holiday season can be a good opportunity to re-examine
our priorities.
In his first foray into the policy world of mental
illness, Dr. Eric Hoskins, the new Ontario Minister of Health, has just
announced that he is "promoting resiliency and well being for all
Ontarians by expanding proven programs" and that he wants "the right
care at the right time and in the right place" for all. A good effort
Dr. Hoskins but you really can and should do better.
Recently, Liberal MLA Laurie Blakeman proposed Bill 202
that would allow students to start a Gay Straight Alliance club in their
schools. However, Alberta Premier Jim Prentice wants to counter the
"unfair and unbalanced approach" of Bill 202. For Canada's LGBTQ youth,
whose suicide statistics are startlingly high, GSAs may make a
difference between life and death.
For
those studying this unique branch of terrestrial life, the
identification of resistance genes in the environment suggested there
had to be antimicrobials out there. If this was the case, the Archaea
were going to play a role. The only question they couldn't answer was
the nature of this role. This past week, a team of researchers from
Vanderbilt University may have provided the answer: Horizontal Gene
Transfer (HGT).
Over the years, at Just For Laughs and Airborne Mobile,
I've never been a major fan of focus groups for multiple reasons; most
notably because the people gather to tell you exactly what they figure
you want to hear. But in this group the men said things to try to appear
smart. The women said smart things.
It's difficult to talk about what bothers you. But it's
those very things that can nag and fester over time. When you're finally
able to bring it up, it can come out in blurts or gushes, in anger or
tears. Let's talk about the elephant in the room: Jian Ghomeshi, former
host of Q. A lot of people have been wondering what it's like to be
inside the CBC right now. I want to share what it's been like for me.
When the Jian debacle ripped through the Broadcast Centre, it was
impossible to ignore. Q, the flagship program, was torn apart and
tarnished.
