FIREFIGHTERS, DEATH & DECEMBER-WHAT WE NEED TO REMEMBER-And Pass It On
Monday, December 1, 2014
Each December, there are some very significant dates for the fire service, worthy of note and well worth kitchen table discussion with Firefighters-especially with the younger ones.
=CHURCH FIRE;
For example, the OUR LADY OF ANGELS fire anniversary (Monday, Dec 1, 1958) in Chicago where 92 kids and 4 nuns lost their lives-a day in 1958 where the heroics of Chicago FF's were well documented.

=BUILDING FIRE:
And in that same city, Dec 22, 2010, Chicago Firefighters Corey Ankum and Ed Stringer were killed in a collapse-on the 100th Anniversary of the Union Stock Yards fire that killed 21 Chicago Firefighters.

FIREFIGHTER "ATTACKED" AT A VERY EMOTIONAL FIRE SCENE IN TEXAS...A SCENE WITH A HISTORY.
Monday, December 1, 2014
A mother and her three-year-old son were killed after a trailer home burned to the ground this morning in Parker County, just west of Fort Worth, Texas. The fire occurred in southern Parker County just before 0900. The victim of the fire was identified as 27-year-old Amber Donahue by a family member. In all, eight different fire departments were called in to assist with the job. The Tarrant County Arson Task Force is helping with the investigation.
Units from Spring Creek Volunteer Fire Department arrived on scene first. As they approached the fire, an individual began attacking one of the firefighters....that suspect was arrested...or at least that's one account.
The Parker County Fire Marshal disputed the account, saying the husband/father of the victims had to be restrained from entering the burning trailer. In the process, a firefighter was knocked to the ground.

Sunday, November 30, 2014
, was hit by a vehicle and taken to the hospital after another car spun out into the accident area.
"It was just a combination of bad luck tonight,” said Marty Grisham with the Tukwila Fire Department.
Around 6 p.m., the firefighter was responding to the crash near Southcenter Mall along I-5 northbound when someone lost control of their vehicle and injured the firefighter.
The firefighter was transported to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
"There was a loss of control of the vehicle, to the point that he hit the first vehicle, and that's what struck our firefighter,” said Grisham.
Ice may have caused the spinout.
"There's patchy ice -- there's black ice all over the region,” said Grisham.
In Poulsbo, firefighters told KIRO 7 earlier in the evening that they were concerned for their safety as they responded to ice-related crashes.

WHEC Video
Thursday, November 27, 2014
There are major developments in the investigation of the 1978 Holiday Inn fire in Greece. It was 36 years ago today that flames spread through the hotel, killing 10 guests.
The fire was ruled an arson and today, for the first time, police are telling News10NBC they have a suspect.
Chief Patrick Phelan tells our Brett Davidsen they hope to hand over their evidence to the District Attorney’s office in the next couple of months. Asked if that meant police have a suspect, Phelan said, “Yes. That would be correct.” Phelan would not identify the suspect in the case. “There’s identified investigative steps that have to be finished and that’s what they’re working on right now. And we hope to be able to do that relatively soon,” added Phelan.
Police re-launched the cold case investigation just over three years ago, putting together a task force of investigators from Greece, ATF and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. Since then, th... [
