VT FF INJURED AT HOUSE FIRE
Firefighters work to put out a house
fire in Whitingham, Dec. 2. (Chris
Mays/Reformer)
Wednesday, December 3, 2014
A firefighter was taken to the hospital Tuesday afternoon after falling during initial efforts to put out a three-alarm house fire on Route 100.
"I don't know what his condition is yet," said Whitingham Fire Department Chief Stanley Janovsky, adding that he would not comment on the firefighters name.
Calls were made to people known to be living at the home to make certain they weren't inside during the fire. No names have been released.
"We're still trying to make that determination. We haven't found anyone inside," Janovsky said. "We're not 100 percent sure."
The cause or origin was not determined yet either as of 3 p.m. on Tuesday. The fire was still active at that time. Janovsky said there was a wood stove inside the home. The home is considered a total loss.
When Janovsky's department received word that the home was on fire, it was believed that someone could be inside.
"We have found a dog," he said.

Rosecrance Rehab Center Treats Firefighters, Paramedics For Alcohol Problems
Rosecrance Video
Wednesday, December 3, 2014
Scott Schaben started working as a suburban firefighter in the 1980s, bonding with his co-workers over off-duty beers. But his social drinking turned compulsive after he went through a divorce a few years ago, consuming his life until he knew he needed help.He ended up seeking treatment at Rosecrance, a Rockford-based recovery center that has what it bills as the nation's first treatment program aimed exclusively at firefighters and paramedics. Schaben, 52, said that being among others who knew the stresses and demands of his job was a considerable help.
"It was just like a huge load taken off my shoulders," he said. "I just felt that even though I didn't know someone, I could still talk to them. It made a big difference."
Researchers have consistently found that members of the fire service drink more than the average adult, a legacy of consumption that dates to when some firehouses doubled as the local tavern.
But when off-duty imbibing leads to add... [

FIREFIGHTERS, DEATH & DECEMBER-WHAT WE NEED TO REMEMBER-And Pass It On
Monday, December 1, 2014
Each December, there are some very significant dates for the fire service, worthy of note and well worth kitchen table discussion with Firefighters-especially with the younger ones.
=CHURCH FIRE;
For example, the OUR LADY OF ANGELS fire anniversary (Monday, Dec 1, 1958) in Chicago where 92 kids and 4 nuns lost their lives-a day in 1958 where the heroics of Chicago FF's were well documented.

FIREFIGHTER "ATTACKED" AT A VERY EMOTIONAL FIRE SCENE IN TEXAS...A SCENE WITH A HISTORY.
Monday, December 1, 2014
A mother and her three-year-old son were killed after a trailer home burned to the ground this morning in Parker County, just west of Fort Worth, Texas. The fire occurred in southern Parker County just before 0900. The victim of the fire was identified as 27-year-old Amber Donahue by a family member. In all, eight different fire departments were called in to assist with the job. The Tarrant County Arson Task Force is helping with the investigation.
Units from Spring Creek Volunteer Fire Department arrived on scene first. As they approached the fire, an individual began attacking one of the firefighters....that suspect was arrested...or at least that's one account.
The Parker County Fire Marshal disputed the account, saying the husband/father of the victims had to be restrained from entering the burning trailer. In the process, a firefighter was knocked to the ground.

WA FF STRUCK AT ICY CRASH SCENE
Sunday, November 30, 2014
, was hit by a vehicle and taken to the hospital after another car spun out into the accident area.
"It was just a combination of bad luck tonight,” said Marty Grisham with the Tukwila Fire Department.
Around 6 p.m., the firefighter was responding to the crash near Southcenter Mall along I-5 northbound when someone lost control of their vehicle and injured the firefighter.
The firefighter was transported to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
"There was a loss of control of the vehicle, to the point that he hit the first vehicle, and that's what struck our firefighter,” said Grisham.
Ice may have caused the spinout.
"There's patchy ice -- there's black ice all over the region,” said Grisham.
In Poulsbo, firefighters told KIRO 7 earlier in the evening that they were concerned for their safety as they responded to ice-related crashes.
