Five children have died after a fire destroyed a mobile home in a small town in southern Texas.

Fire officials were called to the Edna home of Johnny Hernandez and Annabel Ortiz at 05:00 local time on Tuesday, the Victoria Advocate reports.

The town fire marshall confirmed to local broadcaster KTRK that five children, ranging in ages from five to 15, had died inside the house.

A two-year-old, the youngest, as well as the two adults, survived the fire.

Their mother, Ms Ortiz, was brought to hospital and said to be in a fair condition.

Officials told KTRK the blaze started in the home's kitchen area but do not have a cause.
